A recent article in CNN explains gratitude should not be saved for special occasions, but like love, should be practiced or expressed regularly. With a little effort, you should be able to find something to be grateful for every day.  

Experts share four ways to help you practice gratitude. The first is to create a gratitude album on your phone by taking a picture each day of things that bring you joy like a meaningful text, beautiful scenery, fun events on your calendar and pics of loved ones. Don’t worry about your photography skill. Now instead of scrolling through social media, use some of that time to look through your own gratitude album and appreciate the good things in your life. 

Another gratitude practice is to take the time to breathe. Mindful breathing techniques can help relieve tension and reduce stress, and only take a few minutes. When doing, remember to be thankful for your breathing, which is a life-sustaining force. Combine breathing with feelings of gratitude and patience as you strive to feel relaxed and calm. While memory lapses can be a sign of bigger problems, thankfully for the majority of seniors, occasional forgetfulness is a sign of normal aging. The Mayo Clinic weighs in with good lifestyle habits and activities to help sharpen our memory and improve focus.  

The first recommendation is to stay active. When we engage in physical activities, it raises the level of blood flow to the whole body, including the brain. Research even links physical activity to a decreased risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Other studies find it is important to move frequently throughout the day and to try and get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week. This can be a brisk walk. 

Cognitively stimulating exercises are another way to improve focus. Activities include things like puzzles and games, playing an instrument or learning a new hobby. Pairing mental pursuits with social activities is an easy way to interact with others and help ward off depression and feelings of isolation, which both are linked to memory loss. 

Managing stress can also improve focus. If you are feeling stressed, experts say take a few minutes to practice a breathing exercise. One example is to take 10 very slow breaths in and out. Another technique is to imagine yourself in a favorite place like sitting on the beach listening to the waves come and go. Additionally doing a few stretches can be helpful.

Another culprit interfering with balance is inner ear problems. The labyrinth is a part of the inner ear that controls balance and when it becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause lots of problems including vertigo. The condition called Labyrinthitis generally is a result of other problems such as head injuries, viral or bacterial infections, and circulatory system problems like strokes or low blood pressure. 

The National Institute on Aging says families and caregivers should be on the lookout for an older person complaining of unsteadiness; the feeling the room is spinning or moving; confusion; blurry vision; and falling. To determine the cause of the symptoms of lightheadedness or dizziness as well as the best treatments available, consult with your doctor, and if needed, seek the care of a specialist.
